UPDATE: Word from the dyno shop in Batavia, New York, confirms that the latest Bender Turbo kit can breath big life into a modified Yamaha RX-1 4stroke.
Terry Paine confirmed rumors that his company's new Stage 3 turbo kit for the Yamaha RX-1 four-cylinder engine set the highest snowmobile power rating ever registered on the test dyno.
The historic 356 top horsepower came at just over 10,000 revs. With the Stage 3 turbo kit on board, the RX-1's power-to-weight ratio should come in at a quite respectable 2-to-1 (including driver!).
Max torque on this blown four was 190 lbs-ft at 9000 revs! Compare that to a stock RX-1 torque of 80 lbs-ft at just over 7 grand. With the Stage 3 Bender blower kit, you're talking anything but docile!
Of course, Paine notes that the 4stroke Yamaha needs to be modified and must run on higher-octane fuel. The modifications on the test engine included stronger rods and pistons necessary to accept the high power output.
While final pricing is yet to be determined, we suspect that a price tag for this monster power boost will come in around $8,000. Remember, the base RX-1 engine starts out life at a "docile" 140 hp. So, you do the math.
