Racing boostWhen it comes to raising the boost above the 10 psi level, we're in racing territory and a number of items have to be improved. Both Simons and Bender have built race versions in the upper 300-hp range. Both report using Carillo rods, forged lower 10:1 compression pistons, improved head gaskets and stronger head bolts.
For an 8-10 psi boost "trail kit," the stock components are fine, since both kits operate in the 200-hp range, and the stock Yamaha RX-1 engine seems to take the extra power well.
Zeimetz, a CPR customer and avid product tester, reports that the addition of a turbo kit to his RX-1 made the machine into a completely new and fun machine on the trail. The turbo is flexible and well mannered with power on tap anytime you need it. He reports that the most fun is to pull up to a friendly lake race and blow the rest of the contestants away on top end with a stock-looking and very quiet sled.
For now, it seems Yamaha is back on top of the hot-rod game with turbocharged versions of the RX-1.
