Randy Cramer has been assembling Outlaw packages from stock Yamaha sleds and the very best of the aftermarket for his customers for nearly five years. He is a Yamaha dealer now, but he hasn't always been. "The whole Outlaw concept started when we weren't a Yamaha dealership," recalled Cramer. "We started out by selling used sleds and building modified Yamahas. We were kind of an outlaw dealership. That's where it all began."
Now that Randy Cramer Motorsports is an official Yamaha retailer, it can get all the new sleds it wants, but there will always be an Outlaw sled package available. This year, Cramer and his crew brought us the Viper Outlaw for testing. At $1300 over the stock sled's cost, the '02 Outlaw definitely represents one of the best values and easiest Trail Mod sled to own. "We build sleds with good trail performance that are stone reliable," he added.
The Outlaw's mod package is simple. A trio of Hauck Powersports tuners lets the engine breathe easier. Moto Tassinari V-Force reeds replace the stock units for quicker throttle response and a little extra performance. A Randy Cramer Clutch Kit is also included in the price, as is a cool new graphic treatment. All totaled up, the sled is rated at 150 horsepower.
192 Stud Boy trail studs graced the stock track, but are not included in the price. Everything else on the sled is stock- suspensions, skis, windshield, everything.
Performance
The Randy Cramer Motorsports Viper Outlaw earned the Dynotech Holeshot award for the lowest 1000-foot ET in the small engine category, 0-700cc.
Out of the hole, the Outlaw covered the first 60 feet in 1.514 seconds. The stock SXViper's best time at that mark was 1.651. At the 660' beams, the Outlaw had hit 88.06 mph in 7.084 seconds. The stocker recorded a best of 77.05 mph in 7.959 seconds. By the 1000' finish line, the Outlaw had reached 96.98 mph in just 9.555 seconds. Our baseline Viper only hit 84.43 mph, needing 10.818 to get to the stripe.
