SLED COST?
Money is always a factor in racing. Todd estimates that his family put an additional $1,500 to $1,800 into each sled and their little racer's accessories (after buying the sled itself for about $2,000). Some would consider this way too expensive, but it's about on track with the cost for most any kids travel sport such as hockey, soccer or baseball.

On top of sleds, there are entry fees just like other races. But entry fees tend to be significantly lower than most other racing. For example, to become a member of the WKSRA it's only $40 and entry fees are $10 for members and $15 for non-members.

WHERE DO THEY RACE?
Kids races are now standard in most upper Midwestern towns where you see other sled racing. Areas like Eagle River, Wis; Fargo, N.D.; Duluth, Minn.; Searchmont, Ont.; Pontiac, Mich.; and many more offer junior races. Many snocross events, including those run by the WPSA, Michigan Snow X and several other race organizations, have junior classes too.

Much of the excitement from these races comes from the sense of achievement and the praise kids get from their parents. "It is great to see the kids with their trophies, plaques or medals," Todd says. Racing also offers the kids a chance to make new snowmobile friends. "It amazes me what good friends the kids become and what good sportsmanship they have," said Metz.
