PONDERAY, IDAHO – Another new dirt bike conversion kit has just hit the market. This one, Mountain Horse, comes from Timbersled Products (Idaho) and is built more specifically for the mountains.
Like other conversions, a ski-adapter kit replaces the wheel up front, but in back the system much more resembles a typical snowmobile. The Mountain Tamer (snowmobile-style) rear suspension has a 20-degree track approach angle and flotation in deep snow is excellent with its 121x12x2-inch Camoplast Back Country track.
The track length and non-use of a traditional “dirt-bike” monoshock suspension, separates it from other conversion systems.
The sub-frame is made of lightweight tubular chromoly steel with aluminum tunnel. The new assembly mounts to the bike’s frame using the factory swing arm pivot with an adjustable link rod, not the OEM mono-shock. The rod allows you to raise and lower the seat.
In the drive system the drive chain runs from the motor to the jackshaft, and the jackshaft transfers to outside of the tunnel. There is a secondary chain that runs from the jackshaft to the driveshaft (the secondary chain drive is inside a sealed chaincase) and the system drives off the front of the track. There is a Dynalite Wildwood caliper on a disc brake and chain tensioners on both drive chains to allow for different gear changes.
The system adds 60 lbs. to your bike and can be used for any model dirt bikes that are 250cc and larger. Timbersled notes that a 450cc or larger bike will help you get the most out of a kit. It can be fitted to Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, or KTM bikes and retails for $4,995.
