The engineering student team from the University of Idaho has won its second straight Clean Snowmobile Challenge, sponsored by the SAE, with a point total of 1,245. Michigan Technological University took second place with 982 points and Kettering placed third with 963. The Idaho team took the top slot in five of the eleven competition categories at this year's event.

The Clean Snowmobile Challenge gives teams points for producing a snowmobile that is quieter, more fuel efficient and cleaner than current trail models. The challenge lies in the fact that the teams are also scored on how well the sled performs and how much fun it is to ride.

A dozen teams of student engineers converged at Michigan Tech for the fourth annual SAE design competition. Weather conditions were warm and rainy at MTU's Keweenaw Research Center.

Idaho carried the three major components of the event, emissions, noise and fuel economy with its BMW K75RT four stroke powered sled. They took second in handling, fifth in braking and sixth in acceleration. The combined high finishes put them on top the podium.

Other CSC award winners were the University of Wisconsin, Madison for most sportsmanlike conduct, Minnesota State University for best braking, University of Wisconsin, Platteville for best acceleration and the University of Wyoming for best handling.
