The final trek
My machine was repaired by 8:30 the next morning and we were on our way. It was now Feb. 6 as we picked our way along poor trails. Some of us opted for the road. We met up at La Dore where we smoothed our spirits at "Hotel du Jardin", a nice place with a pool, sauna and spa.

The next day we reached La Tuque, which seemed like our back yard. We had been here many times, and home seemed close.

On Feb. 8, we stopped for lunch at "Marineau" in Rouge Mattawin, then at the "Cabanon" in St. Zenon for supper. We were all on our third set of runners and second set of hyfax. The next day was our last. With only 145 km (90 miles) left we would take it easy, despite being eager to get home.

The -10 C (14 F) degree weather seemed like summer to us, and we were in high spirits as we entered Lavaltrie, our hometown. In the last mile of our trip, our hearts were in our throats. We turned down my street and I saw the children lined on both sides, checkered flags in the air, waving us in, hopping up and down with excitement to see us. They had tied several ribbons across the road for a finish line. Our wives waved enthusiastically, holding bottles of champagne. The mental balm of this moment began to sooth the physical hardship we had encountered. The camera set up on my helmet had worked well, so we would have a great documentary of our ride to show our families.

The only major obstacle in undertaking this ride was the untrailed stretch between Matagami and Radisson. While it provided the adventure we craved, it would be great if this area could be developed for snowmobilers. Maybe someday it will be and we'll go back up with our sons!
