Double secret secrecy
Back in the day, the Big Three OEMs (before Yamaha’s market entry) gathered in West Yellowstone, Mont. for factory speed run competitions. Top secret at the time, these speed sleds were kept under wraps all season and were only unveiled minutes prior to making their run down an airport runway strip. Ski-Doo racer Duane Eck, from Driggs, Idaho, broke the speed record in 1969 with the Double Eagle running around 130 hp from the two engines. This was big power for the day and the result was a speed of 95.33 mph. This sled was the first to have a set of tuned expansion chambers on a 2-stroke snowmobile. Ski-Doo headed into the 1970 season as the top-selling brand and holding the World Speed Record.
Ski-Doo continued more versions of the Double Eagle with success in straight line racing, but this dominance didn’t last long. Most Double Eagles were destroyed back at the factory with few survivors. To say Double Eagles are rare is an understatement. The exact number left is unknown, but this one is exquisite!
