Preparations for one of snowmobiling's most grueling events is well under way in Alaska. 72 inches of heavy new snow slowed Iron Dog trail breaking efforts this weekend. Ken Lee and Tracey Brassard worked for 17 hours on Saturday putting in two of the three steps that lead into Happy Valley. This portion of the trail is used by both the Teoso Iron Dog racers and Iditarod mushers.
One of the public's favorite Iditarod mushers, Dee Dee Jonrow, said during a recent trail workshop, "Iron Dog trailbreakers do a great job putting the trail in early. It really helps me in my training efforts and benefits winter recreation opportunities for both snowmachiners and mushers alike."
This coming weekend, weather permitting, Lee and Brassard will be building the trail into Rainy Pass.
Lee and Brassard are the 2001 Tesoro Iron Dog Champions. After last year's race Lee used a portion of his prize money to purchase a wide-track machine built for trail breaking. He is staging it out on the trail specifically for trail breaking work.
The 19th Annual Tesoro Iron Dog 2000 will start at Big Lake on Sunday, February 17.
