Since snowmobilers like to find new and undiscovered trails and areas, Taylor County, in northcentral Wisconsin, offers many pleasant surprises.
Located roughly between Eau Claire & Wausau, Taylor County boasts more than 300 miles of trails criss-crossing the County, and also connecting up with six adjacent counties.
"Our snowmobile trails are maintained by eleven local clubs," says Mike Roiger, treasurer of the Taylor County Snowmobile Clubs Grooming Association. "This year (2001-2002)," he says, "we bought a Surtrac (New Holland tractor with rubber tracks), to add to our two LMCs and Ultimate Groomer."
The Taylor County Snowmobile Clubs Grooming Association takes care of about 200 miles of Taylor County's 300 miles of trails, and the Jump River Runners and Black River Rock Dodgers groom the remaining 100 miles.
A major snowmobile corridor in Taylor County is the Pine Line Rail Trail (#23) -- an old railroad right-of-way -- a scenic, 26.1 mile stretch between Medford and Prentice. It's also the most heavily used of the Taylor County trails. Thus, Roiger advises trying the "many, wonderful, lesser-used trails looping off of the Pine Line Trail, as well as those coming off of other major Taylor County Corridors like #21 and #25."
Taylor County's "most picturesque" trail, in Roiger's opinion, is "the segment of the 35-mile M and E trail that traverses the Mondeaux Recreational Area in the Chequamegon National Forest, easily accessible off of Corridor #23."
Long a winter recreation Mecca, Taylor County boasts trails, facilities, and access for a wide variety of pursuits including tubing, tobogganing, skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing.
Taylor County attractions include Wisconsin's Ice Age National Scenic Trail, which snakes across Taylor County for more than 70 miles, with groomed, tracked x-c ski trails in the winter; including the 5-mile "UGH" Trail near Rib Lake. Taylor County's Perkinstown Winter Sports Area offers inner tubing, x-c skiing; snowmobile trails; and also contains portions of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail.
Taylor County also boasts the 167,000-acre s. quadrant of the Chequamegon National Forest as well as the 17,000-acre Taylor County Forest; and the 7,900-acre Pershing Wildlife Area. Taylor County communities include Medford (County Seat); Rib Lake, Westboro, Stetsonville, Chelsea, Gilman, Lublin and Perkinstown, among others.
A bevy of winter events and activities dot the Taylor County calendar. For information, maps, and list of events, contact Taylor County Tourism, c/o Medford Area Chamber of Commerce, Box 231, Medford, WI 54451; 888-682-9567; 715-748-4729; e-mail: chamber@dwave.net.
