800 TwinsWhile we, of course, wouldn't do this ourselves, we did see some guys performing forbidden competitive acceleration tests on a lake while we were out leisurely riding at the posted 45 mph speed limit.
From what we were able to observe, all three of the 800 twin performance machines- ZR, XC SP and MX Z X- were within a couple sled lengths after about a half mile.
The XC SP seemed to jump out in front early, with the MX Z a close second and the ZR only a few feet behind. As these sleds progressed across the roughly half-mile stretch, the ZR 800 was creeping up on the other two, which maintained their relative distances between each other. What we learned from observing this particular outlaw test is that the 800 single-pipe twin class winner will be decided by tuning.
Any sled should be capable of beating any of its classmates, depending on who set up the carbs, clutches and suspensions. It is also worth noting that there was an SRX 700 running with these rascals. At about the half-mile marker, where the twins had more or less tapped themselves out, the SRX was comfortably motoring past on its long triple-piped, silky-smooth legs.
