Where the 600s were receptive to dealer preparation, the 700cc Single Pipe class made most of its best runs out of the box. With the Polaris 700 XC SP and Ski-Doo MX Z 700 sitting within one horsepower of each other on our dyno testing, we knew it would be a tough duel for dominance. We also knew that with Yamaha's SX 700R giving up 11 ponies to its competitors, it had a tough trail ahead.

The MX Z 700 came in 19 pounds lighter than the XC, with the SX-R another six pounds heavier. All weights were measured with five gallons of fuel and 144 Stud Boy trail studs on the track.

In the Box Stock runs, the XC got to the 660-foot beam first, in 7.720 seconds, while the MX Z posted the top speed at the mark with 86.87 mph. By the 1000-foot traps, the MX Z had taken the lead at 10.272 seconds, and the XC had reached the better speed at 92.02 mph. At the quarter-mile stripe, the MX Z was out in front with an 12.571 ET, and the XC hit the highest speed at 96.35 mph.

Most of the Box Stock stats remained as the best of class, except the 60-foot ET and the 1000-foot speed. White Lake Polaris shaved a hair off of its box stock holeshot time with a 1.718-second trip to the 60-foot beam. Smith Marine's tuning work on the MX Z took the top speed for the 1000-foot mark from the XC with a 92.98 mph split.

Big Moose Yamaha posted the largest gain from Box Stock to Dealer Prep runs. Out of the crate, the SX-R ran 13.463 in the quarter-mile. With some clutching, jetting and suspension tuning, the crew pulled 13.192 seconds, a 2.05% improvement.
