We had been wondering what was happening with the crew at Scorpion lately. There had been no word about production taking place and rumors were swirling about cash flow problems shutting the whole project down. We finally got through to the head man, John Mitchell, for an update.
"We're in the midst of a 50-sled build for this year yet," he said. "We are just waiting on a couple of parts to come in from vendors, then we're sending them all out the door. It's a pretty amazing sight to have all of these machines sitting in our factory. Unfortunately, when you have 358 part numbers in a sled, you have to have all 358 parts included."
Mitchell indicated that the first 50 sleds will utilize PSI's Millennium 890 twin engine with a 76mm billet stroker crank. "Bruce [Kahlhamer] had those engines ready to go, so that's what the first units will use," he said.
We asked him about the cash flow rumors. "Of course in a first year, cash flow is always an issue," Mitchell explained. "I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a consideration. But we have our units about two weeks away from getting to the dealers, and I think that will help us tremendously. Once the first run is out on the trail we will be in better shape. That'll be a huge thrill."
The company's website has some images and updated information on it. You can see more at www.scorpionsleds.com.
Mitchell has promised us a ride yet this winter. When we get a chance to take one out and give it a workout, we'll have our impressions in Test Tracks. Stay tuned…
