The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has issued and published a new recommended practice for determining the sound levels of snowmobiles in the stationary test mode. The new guidelines come after years of work by the SAE and the snowmobile industry, and include procedures for the testing environment and the different instrumentation used in the test.
The new test method, SAE J-2567, is intended to provide an accurate measure of exhaust and other engine noises. It can be used on new or older snowmobiles to determine if they are in compliance with the noise regulations.
The SAE standard is recognized as an international test procedure that can be adopted by governments across the world. For a complete copy of the new test rules, go to the
SAE website under the new standards section and type in the procedure reference number, SAE J-2567.
