Testing is currently going on at Michigan Tech University's Keweenaw Research Center for the SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge, which kicked off Tuesday morning.
Out of the 14 entries this year, 9 have conventional engines modified to reduce emissions and noise, 4 are electric and 1 entry is a hybrid. Electric snowmobiles have zero emissions and are nearly silent. Could this be the future of snowmobiling?
The captains of the top 2 electric snowmobile teams get to travel with their machines to Summit Station in Greenland, where atmospheric and global warming research is being conducted.
An awards banquet at Tech's Memorial Union Ballroom wraps up the event at 6 p.m., Saturday.
