MESA UPDATE: 3 YEARS, WHAT’S CHANGED AT THUNDER MTN.
LAST TIME WE REPORTED on Grand Mesa and the Thunder Mountain Lodge it was almost 3 years ago and owner Mark Stewart (a converted Wisconsinite) was busy renovating. Attitudes toward snowmobilers haven’t always been positive here and Stewart’s crew continues working hard to change that.

The newly renovated bar and restaurant (run by Stewart’s right hand man Billy) was recently named “Roscoe’s” in honor of Billy’s son. There are other places to get food within 30 minutes, but Roscoe’s is THE spot for the best food on, or near, the Mesa.
We had incredible meals during our stay and better service than any posh ski-town. Our 16- to 18-once steaks on our last night would cost $50 a piece just about anywhere, but prices were very reasonable and chef Billy makes every meal to order.

Most of the 11 cabins on site have been renovated and are perfect for a group of riders looking to get into the backcountry. The property overlooks two of the 300+ pristine lakes and reservoirs that dot the Grand Mesa’s top. At print time we had a candid discussion with Mark (always the entrepreneur) and he indicated that after performing many upgrades he was considering moving onto other business ventures and the lodge may be for sale soon. If our budgets would allow us to buy a lodge we would snatch this little piece of heaven up in a heartbeat!
