Speedwerx CFR 800: Stage Tuning
IN OUR JANUARY issue (pg. 10) we previewed a project we had been working on with the aftermarket wizards at Speedwerx. In that article we discussed various stages of performance as we dynoed a Speedwerx improved CFR 800. We used our own stock CFR 800 as a baseline for the buildup to be dynoed against.

Stage-one power in that article included simply a Speedwerx Y-pipe and stage-two included the addition of a Speedwerx single pipe and Boondocker control box. Stage-three added a Speedwerx porting job.

For our Real World ¼-mile acceleration test the guys from Speedwerx stopped by and we took our bone stock CFR 800 and mimicked the build-up that was done earlier in the year for the dyno numbers, not including the porting job. For the Real World acceleration we wanted to do some clutch work too and we didn't have time to wait for porting to be done.

After we took our stock ¼-mile runs, a Speedwerx Stage 2 clutch kit was added. This kit includes a primary spring, new aggressive profile weights, new helix, and a stickier compound belt. (Kit Retail: $350)

The result was an incredible increase in performance out of the hole, great top- end, and incredibly smooth backshifting. The gains with this clutch kit, which is simple to install, were amazing. Peak speed increased from 97.24 mph to 102.47 mph and the ¼-mile ET shrunk from 12.98 seconds to 12.38 seconds. That's impressive!

Our next stage of modification was to put on a Speedwerx single pipe kit, which includes a ceramic coated single pipe, black painted Y-pipe, and a Boondocker fuel controller model for use on all 2009 models. Speedwerx told us this kit adds 10-11 hp and saves 5 lbs. (Kit retail: $580, Boondocker fuel controller: $418) This pipe and fuel controller combo netted 104.76 mph for a top speed in the quarter mile, which was plenty impressive.

Finally, Speedwerx gave us a sneak peek of what's to come. We took a trail ride on the CFR and a new Z1 Turbo that the Speedwerx guys brought with them. The Z1 was equipped with a new prototype Speedwerx muffler, which sounds super tough (no more tractor sounds) and is within a few decibels of the stock muffler. More notably, Speedwerx claims the new muffler saves a whopping 12 lbs. and tacks on an additional 10 horsepower with no other mods or changes necessary!

Snow Studs delivers on traction guarantee
AMSNOW TEAMED up with Snow Studs traction products out of Jackson, Wis., as our Real World traction sponsor this year and the staff couldn't have been happier. Due to the extremely frigid temps during our week of acceleration, mileage, and trail testing, we dealt with a lot of ice and hard, packed down trails.

The new Warthog XZP, Tog Dog, and Big Shot studs we installed from our neighbors at Snow Studs stopped even our biggest sleds quickly and safely on the ice and also increased our take-off abilities as we laced into the gas in our Real World acceleration tests. We also used the new Magnum single runner carbide wear bars up front for maximum positive turning.

While the studs' performance was impressive, we were even more impressed that they come with a lifetime warranty. That's right! We've praised Snow Studs for this before, but for a traction company to warranty bending, breaking, carbide pin fallout, cracked heads, and bad hex stamps, is bold. Even the firm's nylon backers have a year warranty from date of purchase.

Not too shabby!

Here are the stud and carbide setups we used.
