polaris shows 800 ct in edge chassis

Polaris pulled the shroud off of a number of new products at its August dealer meeting in Orlando. While its MSX watercraft, Vegas motorcycle and Predator sport quad may have taken most of the attention, Polaris also showed a model we've been desiring for years. Polaris will finally have a high-powered tandem sled: the 800 Classic Touring.

While it's probably not the flashiest sled in the lineup, this is a big step for Polaris, showing a little of what is to come for 2004. The 800 Touring will feature the Detonation Elimination Technology (DET) system as found on the spring only RMK Vertical Escape. DET protects the engine from damage by sensing detonation's vibration signature in the cylinder head and retarding the timing in three-degree increments until the detonation stops. It then begins advancing the timing, one degree at a time, until it is back to full operation. Operators will see a warning light flashing on the dash if the DET activates. Detonation is most commonly caused by improper jetting, poor fuel quality or changes in elevation.

The 800 CT will also offer Polaris' new Edge Touring rear suspension. The skid is a combination of the XTRA 12 and M-10 suspensions in a 136-inch configuration. Suspension rates are tuned with the Ride Control Adjustment mechanism on the rear shock. A tensioner bolt slides the lower mount position of the rear shock, similarly to the way an M-10 is tuned. The Edge Touring rear suspension is rated at 15.5 inches of travel.

Polaris also uses its modular cargo rack/tonneau cover system on the 800 CT. Owners can rode solo with a large cargo area or two-up with a more standard cargo area by installing or removing the passenger seat. Polaris also offers an assortment of hard top tonneau covers to protect gear on the trail.

The passenger seat is sculpted with a slight bucket, so copilots won't have to keep scooting back on long rides. The seat back also has an adjustable lumbar pad for added comfort.

The 800 Classic Touring will retail at $8,999. It will be available in limited quantities for this season. Be sure to stop by your dealer for more information.
