Polaris has recalled about 1,360 snowmobiles, all from the 2008 model year due to a faulty starting ring-gear.
The three models recalled are the 2008 550 LX, Trail Touring and Trail Touring Deluxe.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission said it has received 10 reports of loose ring-gear attachment bolts or broken gear teeth, but no injuries have been reported. The commission says cracks could form in the starting ring-gear and cause it to fracture into several pieces. The broken pieces could then be propelled out of the chassis at a high speed, causing serious injury or death to the rider and/or bystanders.
In addition, the safety commission says there is a limited quantity of suspect parts that have been sold to consumers from March 3 to Oct. 22 of 2007 that also could be faulty. These parts fit various snowmobiles and could have been installed during service work or as accessory starter installations.
Consumers are urged to not use the affected sleds and contact a Polaris snowmobile dealer to schedule a free repair. Registered consumers should already have been notified.
