Two groups of young snowmobilers were recently at the Polaris headquarters in Medina, Minnesota for snowmobile safety certification classes.

The youngsters attended classes offered by two area snowmobile clubs, the Northwest Trails Association and Loretto Sno-Birds. Polaris provided use of its building, snowmobiles and company personnel volunteers.

At the Polaris facilities on December 2, 2000, the Northwest Trails Association hosted an overflow class of more than 50 youngsters. Club members who are Minnesota DNR-certified snowmobile safety instructors reviewed all aspects of snowmobiling with a consistent emphasis on safety. Instructor Steve Hohag told the class that most snowmobile-related accidents are preventable, and said he helped the eight hours of classroom instruction would help the youngsters become responsible riders.

There was a written examination in the Polaris building, then students moved outdoors to demonstrate their familiarity with the hand signals and the sleds' controls and simulated road and rail crossings.
