A grant to assist Polaris employees in its Roseau, Minnesota, facility will result in a three-year training program that will effect upwards of 500 Polaris employees. The grant is designed around the concept of "cellular manufacturing," which consists of people, machines, or workstations being arranged in processing sequence to reduce waste. The advantages in the concept lead to reduced setup times, tool requirements, throughput, and work in progress.
Polaris is designing its facility to support lean manufacturing concepts of such cellular manufacturing techniques and quick changeover production.
The $383,000 grant was spearheaded by Northland Community and Technical College to assist northern Minnesota firms with training and making them competitive in the changing workplace and world markets. This is the fourth such grant to be developed by the Northland staff.
