Pennsylvania Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) Secretary Michael DiBerardinis announced July 1 that a $1.16 million grant was awarded to plan, acquire, construct and maintain recreational trails in 19 counties within the state.
The funding, made possible by the 1998 Federal Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century, supports both motorized and non-motorized activities including biking, hiking, horseback riding, snowmobiling, ATV riding, aquatic activities and opportunities for people with disabilities. The grant program provides up to 80 percent of the cost, while the applicant provides the remaining 20 percent.
The grants are part of a DCNR Community Conservation Partnership Program that helps communities and organizations conserve natural resources, provide recreation, enhance tourism and foster economic development.
"These grants continue our commitment to making outdoor recreational opportunities available in every community and region of the state," DiBerardinis said in a press release.
Among the organizations receiving portions of the grant money are the Pennsylvania State Snowmobile Association- which will use the award to continue a snowmobile safety radio campaign, and the Hyner Mountain Snowmobile Club, Inc.- which will renovate and develop the Hyner Trail.
