The Northwest Territory is practically the North Pole, so cold, snowy weather is the norm here.
It's pretty common to see snow through May, and springtime sledding trips help guarantee a little bit warmer than the winter average of -3 F, though averages in April and May still come out in the 20 F range.
There's a network of snowmobile trails here, and there's always the possibility of riding down one of many winter ice roads. Popular trips include rides from Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk, or longer treks like the one from Invuik to Paulatuk that was featured in the January 2005 issue of American Snowmobiler.
Guided tours are recommended, as most of the northern region is remote, with a few small towns and a lot of open roads. In fact, the population of the whole territory is slightly more than 37,000 in its more than 1.1 million km of land.
