The government awarded a total of $1.6 million in federal gas tax money to various trail operators in New York.
Many of the grants will benefit snowmobilers, including several multi-county projects. Several area clubs received up to $100,000 to purchase trail-grooming equipment. Other projects using grant money include bridge construction and trail renovation.
The New York State Office of Parks and Recreation administers the federal matching grant program. Funding originates from the Federal Highway Administration's Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century.
