Snow in Michigan, in August? You betcha!

Last weekend, the winter lovers at Nelson's Speed Shop in Greenville, Mich., conducted their annual August snocross race, swap meet, vendor show, vintage races and sled sale. Yamaha demo rides also were available onsite.

How did they do it?

Owner Jack Nelson has a load of space available right behind his shop and he's been doing this for years. Nelson showed AmSnow where he buried more than 2,800 yards of snow last winter on his property just to be used for the event.

All that snow was placed in tarps, insulated, and buried several feet under ground, then it was cared for and looked after by the crew at Nelson's in order to make sure it would last until August. Only a small amount of snow melted, but dozens of dump-truck loads were hauled out of the snow-pit on Saturday and spread across the pre-formed snocross track. The summer snow held up well enough for several different classes of snocross racers to see some fast action.

In addition to the snocross track, Nelson's Sno Motion event highlighted the high-flying action of the daredevil ATV group known as The Bomb Squad. Spectators were awed with the freestyle tricks these riders performed off their portable ramp and landing area, including a gigantic back flip to end the demonstration.

Even more impressive, these riders continued with their demonstration even though one of the riders took a spine-compressing fall during testing early in the day.

Nelson's also displayed 2008 snowmobiles from all four manufacturers, and naturally sold a bunch too, along with hundreds of used machines, plus new apparel, parts, trailers and more.
