more ponies than we thought

Officials at Ski-Doo were caught off guard with our November 2002 issue of AMERICAN SNOWMOBILER when we guesstimated the power of their Rotax 1000cc 4-stroker used in the luxury editions of the Legend V-1000. Since no one at Bombardier was forthcoming with power statistics, we guessed the sled to be similar in power to current editions of Arctic's and Polaris' 4-strokers, somewhere in the 40 to 50 hp range. "Wrong" said official Ski-Doo spokesmen, who now inform us that the V-1000 is rated at 80 horsepower.

We will admit to using a bit of "editorial" license with our guesstimated power number of 40 horsepower, but still feel that the pre-production test unit that we rode was definitely not up to par if its power range is 80 hp. At the time we test rode the Ski-Doo V-twin, it definitely did not reflect a performance level of 80 horsepower.

So, bottom line is simply that we will make an early attempt to test ride an actual production unit in an effort to give our readers a more complete evaluation based on an real world unit. We'll be getting back to you later with the updated details! Stay tuned...
