St. Louis County commissioners, in northern Minnesota, have unanimously passed a speed limit increase for lakes over 10,000 acres that also have marked trails. The new limit of 65 mph will be effective only during daylight hours and when the weather conditions permit. Minnesota's 50 mph state speed limit will be in effect whenever conditions are less than ideal, and during the nighttime hours.
There are eight lakes in St. Louis County that meet the criteria. They are Burntside, Kabetogema, Lac La Croix, Namakan, Pelican, Rainy, Superior and Vermillion.
