FridayThe Roll Trail provides two excursions. The first, the Roll Trail Loop, is accessible at a staging area on Old 612, 1 1/2 miles southwest of downtown Lewiston, or via the side roads from the Redwood Motor Inn, Lewiston Hotel, Lewiston Lodge, or Garland Resort. This trail rolls through deep woods, fields of pine trees, past abandoned log cabins and across back roads that remain unplowed in winter months.
For a breather, stop at Pickerel Lake. At this hidden fishing hole in the middle of the woods, the stars light up the clearing and glisten off the snow-and-ice-covered lake. Sleds hum in the distance and the pines whisper at your back as the wind blows through the treetops while excitement stirs in the pit of your gut.
That or hunger.
Whether you decide to ride or eat, the Roll Trail Loop offers both, circling for 40 miles. If you are looking for a heaping hamburger or a fresh-from-a-bar-oven pizza, head northwest along the Loop until connecting with the North Branch Trail out of Gaylord, then go south to Lovells Riverside Tavern.
If your party is wound up and ready to ride, head southwest on the Grayling, Lovells Trail, and you can make Grayling in 35 miles. Or, turn northwest and follow the North Branch Trail for 44 miles into Gaylord where restaurants, pubs, shops and hotels form a Mecca of entertainment in the snowy Michigan wilderness.
