The Vermont state Senate approved a resolution that had been also approved by the Vermont House thanking private landowners for opening their land to the sport of snowmobiling.
The Vermont Association of Snow Travelers, Inc. (VAST) is a private non-profit corporation that runs the Statewide Snowmobile Trails Program (SSTP) for Vermont. The SSTP has more than 5,900 miles of snowmobile trails, of that, 85 percent of the snowmobile trails travel over private land.
The Resolution acknowledges that snowmobiling has become one of Vermont's foremost winter recreational activities and that VAST and its local clubs have developed an extensive network of trails. A great number of trails cross private land, and landowners are under no obligation to allow the trails on their property. And, landowners do not receive payment for the use of their land. In total, there are more than 9,200 private landowners who allow the use of their land to host the Vermont statewide trail system.
