Grass Drag studding
Q What would be the minimum amount of 1.06-inch chisel studs needed in a 15x136x0.5 inch grass track on a 700 triple Pro Stock for 500-foot grass drags with a clay start? I have about 312 push-through 7mm chisels in there now, but some are bent or broken and wondering if I could go with less studs? I also know that a 13.5-inch track is the way to go, but this is the track I have. I have not run grass in years, just snow drags, but I will be going to dyno my sled and while I was in the area I’ve decided I want to race at the Top Gun Shootout this year … instead of just watching. Mostly to just see what my sled may run in 500 feet on grass as a Pro Stock 700. –

A Most of our grass racers are using between 188 and 244 studs on 700 Pro Stocks. Engagement rpm, driver weight and the amount of track on the ground all play a big part in the number of studs. Two different ideas are to run down the track on the tips of the studs never penetrating them fully, this would require more studs and help with top speed because you don’t have to push the stud in as far and then pull it out (both rob hp). The other idea is to use less studs and fully penetrate them. Less track weight and more track speed. Both work, but plan your pattern using 4-inch one lug and 6-inch the next. Add and subtract studs as you test. Good luck! –
