Fuel for Drag Racing
Q:
I run a 2000 ThunderCat on asphalt. My sled is piped, with bigger carbs, stock timing, stock compression and no porting… and I would like to keep it that way. I run 87 octane pump gas, but would like to get away from pump fuel. What fuel can be used? I’ve heard I can run 110 octane and lower, or I have to modify my motor to run better fuel. To me, fuel high in octane on an unmodified engine is a waste, and I don’t want to spend the cash on modifying a good setup. I just want consistent fuel. - ACR

A: Stay with the 87 if there is no detonation. You have no real reason to switch. The only other possibility is if you can find a place to buy “rec fuel,” which is traditional gasoline (no ethanol). That’s a better pump fuel. – Jamie Bellman, Bellman Oil Inc.
