international snowmobile safety week

There are many risks involved in riding on or around frozen lakes, rivers and streams. For instance, some streams don't freeze if they're spring fed. Other times, you won't be able to see open water until you're sled is barrelling over it. Although no one wants to think about falling through the ice, here are a few tips to remember if you're ever in that situation:
1. Do not undress. Hypothermia sets in within minutes.
2. Use your helmet as a floatation device.
3. Get to the edge of the ice and put your arms flat on it. 4. Kick as hard as you can. You might only have one shot at getting out.
5. When you're on top of the ice, don't stand up! Instead, distribute your weight by rolling to thicker ice.
For added safety, consider purchasing a floatation snowmobile suit and an ice pick to help you escape chilling situations.
However, prevention is the best medicine. Remember to be safe!
