how to add ripco handle balls

If you are an aggressive rider, you are probably aware that the small knob at the end of the OEM grip doesn't exactly stop your glove from sliding off the handlebar when you're cornering. It's not important how you discovered this fact, the important thing is to correct the problem before you tryto take that corner at high speeds again.
A simple solution is the Ripco Handle Balls. They are available in several colors to match most Arctic Cat, Polaris, Ski-Doo and Yamaha models and are relatively easy to install.
The recipient of this do-it-yourself project is a 1999 Yamaha 700 SX.
1. Locate the part of the rubber grip where it begins to curveupward to form the small knob at the end of the grip. Take a utility knife and slice off the end of the grip.
Note: On this Yamaha, there is a plastic insert, in the shape of an"X" at the end of the handlebar that must be removed before youcan continue.
Also, if you are installing Handle Balls on a Yamaha, there is a thicksection of rubber at the end of the grip that had to be smoothed out beforethe ball could be attached.
Hand grips are different on each sled. On a Polaris, for example, thereis no grinding or removal of any plastic inserts. You simply slice off theend of the grip and attach the ball.
If you are installing the Handle Balls on a Yamaha, go to step #2. Ifyou are installing them on another brand, move ahead to step #3.
2. With a dremmel tool, smooth out the end of the grip. Make sureit is smooth before you attempt to slide the Handle Ball on, because thereis a small grove where the handlebar must slip into on the ball and if thereare any bumps, it will not fit.
3. Slip the black insert into the Handle Ball.
4. Thread the bolt through the Handle Ball and give it a few turns. If you do not turn the bolt a few times before you try to install it, youwill end up fishing the insert out of the inside of the handlebar.
5. Push the Handle Ball, with the bolt and insert in place, intothe grip. Any Handle Balls that are purchased this year are a new aerodynamicdesign, so they must be installed correctly. To do this, be sure to installthem so the word "Ripco" is right-side up.
6. Take a 7/16 ratchet and tighten the bolt. Tighten it untilit is snug. Do not over-tighten the bolt or you will pull the brass threadsout of the insert.
7. Place the end cap over the bolt.
8. Repeat on other side.
Once you have your Handle Balls installed, Ripco recommends that you check them periodically to make sure they are still tight. If they are not tight, they may slide off, which means you may slide off the handlebars and wipe out.
