12 Trailering Tips
1. Do not overload. Stay within your Gross Vehicle Weight Rating(GVWR) capacity. See your trailer's identification plate for the GVWR.
2. Follow the axle manufacturer's recommendations for checkinglug nuts on wheels.
3. If the trailer has been idle for several months, it is a goodidea to grease the bearings as condensation can build up in the bearings.Regular use keeps bearings moisture free.
4. Check trailer tire pressure regularly and keep inflated perthe psi listed on the sidewall of the tire.
5. Check your coupler periodically for adequate lubrication. Adry coupler and hitch ball will cause excessive wear, requiring replacement.
6. Make sure you have a pin or padlock to secure the latchinglever on the coupler. Without properly securing the latching lever, it couldaccidentally disengage allowing the coupler to jump off the ball.
7. Make sure your trailer's safety chains have a rating that meetsor exceeds the GVWR of the trailer. Securely latch the chains to links (orrings) on the tow vehicle.
8. Cross the safety chains before attaching them to your tow vehicle. This technique creates a cradle to catch the coupler should it disengagefrom the tow vehicle preventing it from dragging or plowing into the road.
9. Do not allow the chains to drag on the road surface becauseover time this will weaken the chains and lessen their effectiveness.
10. Secure your load so it does not shift while you are towing.
11. Before each trip, check the operation of all lights on thetow vehicle and trailer.
12. Use common sense when towing a trailer. Watch your speed andmake your turns a bit wider to accommodate your trailer.
