The folks at Bombardier aren't counting on just one type of engine technology for the future. The engineering expertise continues in many directions as witnessed by both Sea-Doo personal watercraft and Ski-Doo snowmobiles. On the sled side, Ski-Doo tells us that its Rotax 4TEC testing wrapped up with better than expected results.
"Imagine our excitement about finishing our on-snow testing of the Rotax V-1000 4- TEC ahead of schedule, with the engine's performance and reliability exceeding our estimates," explained a Ski-Doo spokesman.
Ski-Doo reps stated that the V-1000 was getting between 19 and 22 miles per U.S. gallon and between 23 and 26 miles per Canadian gallon. All of that from a one-liter four-stroke. The V-1000 powered sleds are claimed to have performance similar to a 500cc carbureted two-stroke engine.
Ski-Doo spokesmen note that since this was a new engine, Ski-Doo had very conservative allocations for its dealers at the Spring sales meeting. Due to demand back home for a viable four-stroke product, many were disappointed. But, since testing went so well and was completed ahead of schedule, Ski-Doo was able to increase its production run by 50 percent to satisfy some of this demand.
If like many Ski-Doo fans looking for a 4-stroker, you may have been told early in the season that local dealers were sold out. That's not the case as you can find ample inventory V-I OOO-equipped Legend and Grand Touring Sport sleds still available. Consumers interested in this clean and quiet trail vee twins should contact their local Ski-Doo dealer.
Look for more four and two-stroke technology to come out of the Rotax engineering shop. Don't be surprised to see direct injection and some form of performance-boosted power plants as well in the very near future.
