Radar testing began for Double D Testing & Racing on Saturday, Jan.30, 1999. With a new Stalker ATS computerized radar gun and huge speed board in hand, they were ready to go. Ninety-seven racers signed up to test and tune their sleds for the first run. There were: 41 Ski-Doo, 21 Polaris, 19 Yamaha and 16 Arctic Cat. The weather was decent, which prompted about 500 fans to come out to watch. The local TV station also came out for the racing. The track was 1000 ft. in length and the top speed recorded for the day was 106.6 MPH by a 1999 T-Cat 1000.
Double D Testing & Racing had its first radar race on Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999. The track for this series was 2000 ft. long. There were 90 racers signed up and ready to go on another fabulous day. About 500-700 fans came out to watch this time. Top speed of the day was by a 1994 1000 Storm at 138.9 MPH.
The next test session was held Feb. 6, 1999. Thirty-seven racers signed up to test, most of whom were local riders. The top speed of the day was 119.4 MPH by a 1999 T-Cat 1000.
Bad weather kept the races from being held the weekend of Feb.13-14, 1999. Some rain kept spectators from coming out.
The weekend of Feb.18-19-20, 1999 had 84 racers signed up to test. Again, most were from around North Bay, Ontario but a few filtered in from surrounding areas. Top speed from these days was by an improved 1998 ZRT 800 clocked at 121.6 MPH.
Sixty racers sign up for the Feb. 21, 1999 race held for the North Bay (Ont.) Winter Carnival. The machines were fast, but there was a nip in the air and that kept some of the spectators at home. Top speed of the day was by an improved 1994 1000 Storm at 140.7 MPH.
The Feb. 27, 1999 runs boasted 31 racers. The weather warmed up, so the speeds were down slightly. Top speed registered was by a 1993 T-Cat clocked at 117.3 MPH.
At the Mar. 5, 1999 races, Double D Testing & Racing was running on a 660 ft. track for 11 racers. Top speed was 115.1 MPH by a 1999 Yamaha SRX 700.
On Mar. 6, 1999, Double D Testing & Racing was out testing on a 2000 ft. track. Thirty-nine racers signed up to test on the chilly day. The top speed was 120.5 MPH by a 1993 T-Cat 900.
The Mar. 7, 1999 Double D Testing & Racing was held in Restoule, Ont. for the Restoule Snowmobile Club. Sixty-four signed up to race on the 2000 ft. ice track. Top speed of the day was by a 1999 Mach Z at 117.1 MPH.
Mar. 12, 1999, seven racers came out to test on a 2000 ft. track. The day was cool and sunny. Top speed registered was 113.1 MPH by a 1999 SRX 700.
For the Mar. 13, 1999 tests Double D Testing & Racing was running on a 2000 ft. track for 11 racers. The weather again was cool and sunny. Top speed was 120.1 MPH by a 1993 T-Cat 900.
Mar. 20-21, 1999 was to be the last weekend of testing and racing for Double D Testing & Racing. The weather got warm late in the week and the lake became wet and unsafe to race on. The Mar. 21 race was then cancelled.
The number of sleds that tested and raced on Double D Testing & Racing race tracks were: Ski-Doo, 152; Polaris, 136; Arctic Cat, 104; Yamaha, 97. These numbers do not include the radar runs for the snowmobile clubs. For the three club races, 190 racers signed up.
Double D Testing & Racing is now getting things in motion for the 1999-2000 radar testing season.
