The first radar run of the 2002 season went off without a hitch for Double D Testing & Racing. While many other events are being cancelled or postponed, radar run #1 & #2 went on as scheduled. For the 4th season in a row Double D Testing & Racing's radar run track in North Bay Ontario hosts a contest of sleds and riders of every shape size and model. With the simple set of classes - stock means stock, over 75 participants came out to vie for top speed, the great prizes and cash payback.
Top Speed of the Day on Sat. Jan. 19/02 was Ron Cleaver (pictured here) with his Ski-Doo MXZ 925 Pro Stock Full Body sled at 141.3 MPH. Sun. Jan. 20/02 Rob Julien riding his 1000 Pro Stock Arctic Cat had Top Speed of the Day at 140.8 MPH.
And what better place to go over 100 miles per hour than on a safe smooth track in a perfect straight line with as much shut off as needed and all the safety features to ensure that everyone goes home safe & sound. If top speed isn't in the cards for the day, there is still a random chance with all the prizes drawn at Barracuda Billiards following the race.
The locals were out in full force on the weekend with hopes of placing in many of the classes available. Sat. Jan.19/02 was a nice cool day with a few sunny breaks. The 600cc Single Stock class witnessed a battle between Reg Laporte on his Arctic Cat ZR 600 & Devin Varcoe riding his Polaris XC 600. The 2 were trading 1st place all day. Devin's last run of 108.8 MPH passed Reg's 108.3 MPH to take 1st place prize. In the 600cc Triple Stock class local racer & Double D volunteer Jason Seguin placed 1st with a speed of 106.4 MPH. 700 Triple Stock class was a good one to watch. Stan Bullett (pictured above) firing his Yamaha SRX 700, Troy Prior zipping on his Ski-Doo Mach 1 700 & Claude Trudel riding his Yamaha SX 700. The 3 were trading places for most of the day. Stan's SRX 700 fired a 117.8 MPH pass to take 1st place. Troy's Mach 1 700 hit 116.5 MPH & Claude's SX 700 ran a 116.3 MPH pass.
The best showing for the weekend had to be Dale & Dan from Carlson Sports in North Bay on their 2001 440 Sno Pro & 2002 ZR 800. The 2 machines were placed 19 times in the top 3. All weekend they worked and raced and worked and raced and after consistent speeds in the low 100's, they were able to get the ZR 440 up to 105.0 MPH & the ZR 800 up to 118.8 MPH. Congratulations all the way around to that Arctic Cat Race team.
Pro Stock Class on Sat.19 had the big guns out in full force. Ron Cleaver from Sudbury on his Ski-Doo MXZ 925 had top speed of 141.3 MPH leaving Bob Julien just behind in 2nd place on his Arctic Cat 1000 at 141.0 MPH. Our favorite 19-year-old Vera Beaven from Engleheart placed 3rd on her T-Cat at 133.7 MPH. Vera has been racing for a number of years under the strict guidance and supervision of her dad Bruce.
Sun. Jan.20/02 was an even nicer day for radar. There was more sun & warmer than Sat. With the warmer weather on Sun. some tuners were able to get more speed of their sled. The classes on Sun. to watch were the 800 IMP & 1000 IMP classes. 800 IMP had Wayne Legge driving his Ski-Doo Mach Z 800 & Jason Souliere on his Ski-Doo F-III 800. Jason Souliere was playing catch up all day. Wayne set a speed of 121.4 MPH on his 2nd pass before Jason had made a trip down the track. Jason chased after that speed all day & came in after 4 runs with his best speed of 121.2 MPH. The 1000 IMP class was a fight all day as well. Brad "Thunder" Boltz was out of the gates first & set a speed of 123.8 MPH on his T-Cat 1000. Reg Laporte wrenching his T-Cat 1000 was able to pass Brad on his third run with a 124.4 MPH pass. Brad was not able to break the 124 MPH mark on his last two runs & finished 2nd.
