diplomat amp rascal by leisure design corp
Amsnow
The Diplomat and Rascal were manufactured from about 1971 through 1973
by Leisure Design Corporation (Spurgeon Design Service) in Excelsior, Minnesota. The Diplomat was introduced first in 1971 followed by the Rascal in 1972.
The firm seemed to hang its hat on a suspension system that was described as the first new departure in suspension design since the slide rail system. It was constructed using variable rate coil springs that responded to the strength of the demand placed upon them.
In 1973, there were eight models (three Diplomats and five Rascals) featuring three different engine brands, including the Sachs Wankel. The Rascal came in only one color, red, with a black bottom. The Diplomat featured a choice of metallic blue or metallic marigold with a black bottom.
All engines were twin cylinder except the Wankel, of course. All fuel
capacities were six gallons and all sleds weighed about 320 pounds. Options included electric start on the 400 and 440 models only. Tach, speedometer, shocks, backrest, canvas cover and light package (amber running lights and brake lights) were optional for all models. We could not find any record of these sleds being built after 1973, but we did find reference to a prototype as late as 1978. AS
