In the first round of dyno-testing for the Dec. 11th American Snowmobiler Shoot-Out, Ski-Doo's high output MXZ 670 outpulled the Indy XC 700. The Ski-Doo in box stock preparation showed 129 horsepower on DynoTech's SuperFlow dyno compared to Polaris' domestic built 700 twin which tallied 121 hp.
At the Batavia, New York, dyno site, the sleds were subjected to nearly 50 degree temperatures which drained some power. In dyno runs of a 1998 Indy XC 700 we've seen a high of nearly 125 horsepower at around 7900 RPM. The Ski-Doo HO's dyno performance backs up a very strong, season-long showing on the grass drag circuits this past autumn.
Only the Ski-Doo and Polaris Shoot-Out sleds were dyno-tested on Monday (December 7). The Ski-Doo Mach Z 800cc triple showed a high horsepower run of 154 HP to best the box stock Polaris XCR 800 which had 150 HP. But that's a far better showing than any previous Indy 800cc triple. In dyno test runs of an early production XCR 800, we've seen just over 159 horses kicking in at 8600 revs.
Polaris's XCR 700 got revenge on the Ski-Doo Mach Z 700 triple. The Indy rated 139 HP in box stock form to the Mach 1's 134 horsepower top end of Shoot-Out sleds.
An equally close matchup was seen between the all new Ski-Doo MXZ 600 and Polaris XC 600. The 'Doo pumped out 107 horsepower to the Indy's 105 horsepower best.
Keep in mind, our dyno testing relates strictly to finding "ground zero" for the sleds. These dyno runs are conducted on box stock setups with generic factory recommended tuning. In the dealer prep segment, the local dealers will be allowed to adjust carbs and clutching, which should result in portions of miles per hour gained and fractions of seconds shaved.
The Shoot-Out gets underway Friday, December 11th at the White Otter Fish & Game grounds in White Lake, New York. Gates will be open by 9:30 AM. Admission is $6 per person.
