clean snowmobile competition in full swing
Amsnow
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is hosting a competition of colleges and universities in which students reengineer an existing snowmobile for improved emissions and noise while maintaining or improving the performance characteristics of the original snowmobile. The modified snowmobiles are also expected to be cost-effective so that a snowmobile outfitter could afford to purchase them and still make a profit running tours in national parks.
The students have been working on their projects for months, and will be tested this week in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The schools have each modified a 1998 Polaris Indy Trail snowmobile. A total of $23,000 will be awarded as prizes to the top three places overall in the Clean Snowmobile Competition 2000. There will also be special prizes for winning individual events. The prize money will be given to the winning schools with the understanding that it will be used for future automotive projects.
Schools competing are:
Colorado State University
Colorado School of Mines
Michigan Technological University
Minnesota State University- Mankato
SUNY at Buffalo
Ecole de Technologie Superieure
University of Waterloo
The competition begins tomorrow and runs through Friday, March 31, 2000.
