Arctic Cat announced that it is making a limited production run of 100 of its new four-stroke snowmobiles. Fifty of the 100 will be available for public use via rental in Yellowstone National Park this season through a snowmobile tour company.

Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura and Arctic Cat CEO, Chris Twomey are scheduled to ride four-stroke snowmobiles off the production line at the Arctic Cat plant in Thief River Falls, Minnesota this Friday, December 15.

Cat sources say that it is on schedule to begin full production of the four-strokes next year- with it commercially available for the 2001-2002 season. The four-stroke snowmobiles run quieter and produce lower emissions than typical two-stroke machines.

Two of the four-stroke snowmobiles were loaned to the National Park Service in Yellowstone National Park last year. Park staffers gave the product positive reviews.

According to Arctic Cat, its four-stroke snowmobiles use a naturally aspirated 660cc liquid-cooled engine which produces approximately 45 horsepower. The snowmobiles use regular unleaded gasoline, obtain 20 to 30 miles per gallon during normal trail usage and have an operating speed range of 60 to 70 mph depending on load.

The U.S. Department of the Interior is still planning to ban snowmobiles in Yellowstone, beginning with the 2003-2004 season.
