TOWING 101:
• If you're in the market for a new tow vehicle, consult a trailer towing guide to find one that suits your needs.
• If you're planning on towing a trailer weighing over 2,000 lbs., go for a "towing package." It usually includes a trailer hitch, wiring harness, heavy duty suspension, and oil coolers for the engine and transmission.
• Check your tow vehicle's fluid levels often, and treat it to an oil change more frequently. Haulin' those toys to the trail puts a lot of extra stress on your truck's engine and transmission.
• Be sure the trailer has had routine maintence checks.
• Make sure you've got a high quality hitch, installed professionally.
• Check all lights and safety chains on your vehicle and trailer regularly.
• Hook up your trailer on a flat surface. And never exceed the tow-bar or hitch-weight rating.
• An extra can of axle grease doesn't take up much room, and can come in really handy on a long road trip. Use it.
• If you're heading for the mountains this winter, keep in mind that for every thousand feet you travel above sea level, your vehicle loses 2-3% horsepower efficiency. To compensate for the loss of performance, you'll need a vehicle with an extra 1,000 pounds of towing capacity to climb the mountains.
