The saying “ride it like you rented it” may give snowmobilers a less than ideal view of renting a snowmobile. But a perfect winter getaway wouldn’t be complete without smelling sweet exhaust right? Even if you own sleds, you may end up in a predicament when your sled is in the shop, but you still want to ride, OR your snowmobile destination was too far to trailer sleds too.
With that in mind,
AmSnow spoke to Brad Schmier from Yellowstone Adventures for tips including budgeting expenses when renting on the road. Schmier has 80 snowmobiles in his fleet that are available for renting, and about 13 to 35 per day are rented out mostly to tourists visiting Yellowstone National Park. If a snowmobiler is planning a trip around a holiday weekend, Schmier recommends reserving a sled at least 30 days out because spots fill up fast.
The cost of renting a snowmobile from a company like Yellowstone Adventure ranges from $139 to $199 per day. A daily rental is considered 8am to 5pm, with most rentals lasting between two to three days. A damage security deposit may be held on a credit card. Also, if airline weight restrictions limit your suitcase packing, a complete clothing package of boots, suit, gloves and helmet can be rented for $17 a day.
Experience level makes a difference as to what type of snowmobile you can hop on to. Schmier said a renter’s level and what he wants to do in the snow are evaluated first. Entry-level, touring 2-ups and deep snow mountain sleds can be rented from Yellowstone Adventures.
If plans include a tour of the National Park, a guide is required. The fee and the price varies depending on group size. Guides can, also, show riders outside the park trails and places for extreme experiences. More info:
