The BOSS seat company sells about 3,000 units a year- mostly in the west. However, midwest and eastern sales are growing, according to Atherley. He gives partial credit to FAST, which promotes the seat and is placing BOSS seats on all its Blade models. Another company that utilizes the BOSS seat is Crazy Mountain Motorsports and its Crazy Mountain Xtreme.
While OEM seats are mass produced for the "general rider," every BOSS seat is custom-built to a driver's weight and riding style. Atherley invested in computer-controlled manufacturing equipment that automatically calculates the needed material to build a seat to a driver's physical size. Heavier drivers demand more foam, but lighter drivers do not. By having a computer that calculates foam density, a seat is built to exacting measurements.
Depending on a customer's order, BOSS can build a seat to hold an avalanche shovel, handle or probe, all without affecting ride comfort and the seat's rapid reaction time. The storage areas for these items are designed into the seat's rearmost corner, back and to the side of the trunk. Also, customers can order custom screen graphics.
Another benefit of buying a BOSS seat is when you sell your sled, you can reattach the original seat (nice for the guy buying the used sled) and take your BOSS seat with you- provided it goes on the same brand.
Atherley explains he builds seats that have an inner fuel cell, that holds enough fuel (one-half gallon) for competition. This is stealthy because the OEM tank remains, giving the illusion the driver is hauling three gallons of fuel. These are time-consuming to build, but the fierce competitor wants them. Some drivers and race teams who use BOSS seats on their mod sleds are Team Yamaha and Polaris. Team Arctic Cat used BOSS seats 2001.
Prices range from $490 to $500. The price can raise depending on exotic need. The extra storage pouch is an additional $25 option. Custom graphics can be completed for $50 per color. For more information contact BOSS Seats at 801/785-3413.
