Could there be a supercharged 4-stroke Ski-Doo in your future? If you're into Personal Watercraft, Bombardier's Sea-Doo group already has a supercharged Sea-Doo waiting for you.
For 2003, the PWC arm of Bombardier's recreational products group unveiled a 185-horsepower, supercharged Rotax four-stroke 4-TEC 1494cc marine engine with multi-port electronic fuel injection. Sea-Doo calls its new watercraft engine the most powerful to date.
A PWC-specific engine, the Rotax is designed and engineered to withstand the heavy demands placed on a watercraft engine. That's PR-speak for nearly constant full-on throttle and pulling heavy loads like skiers and wake boarders.
The key difference between the supercharged Rotax and competitive "turbo-charged" engines is unlike turbo-charged engines that need to "spool up," the supercharged 4-TEC engine provides instantaneous throttle.
For those of you addicted to the "Wings" segment of the History Channel, you know that superchargers were proven reliable and successful with Allied bombers during World War II over Nazi-occupied Europe.
With the 4-TEC vee-twin in select 2003 Ski-Doo models seeming a bit down on power, could a quick solution be a "boost" of supercharged performance for model year 2004? Based on the fact that the Sea-Doo 4-TEC enjoyed a 30 horsepower boost with the supercharger, would we see a more palatable 20-25 HP power upgrade in the Ski-Doo 4-TEC?
The Supercharged 4-TEC joins Sea-Doo's Orbital Direct Injection 1000cc marine engine as Rotax marine powerplants utilize different directions to meet emisisons and mileage standards.
