The Future?
So how hard would it be for Yamaha to convert its successful five valve 1000 to a snowmobile engine? Yamaha's new product development engineer Jim Kedinger came by our booth at Haydays and I passed this question by him. Jim's only reply was that the snowmobiles we will ride five years from now will be very different from what we ride today.
You can take that answer any way you like, Jim was obviously not going to give away any secrets, but if anyone could build a successful light four stroke snowmobile, Yamaha would have the technology to do it. It would not be a heavy Harley, but something light and fast like those 1000 Supersports that flew by on the highway. Even if this is the future, and I end up driving a four stroke snowmobile 10 years from now, I may still be wishing I had that nimble two stroke 600 Polaris XC SP with the twin pipes. Enjoy it while you can.
