Out of the hole CFR revs quicker with a 4.3-lb. lighter crankshaft and the sled has the double sparkplug design in both cylinders. Spent fuel leaves via APV electronic exhaust valves and there's an exhaust pipe temp sensor that keeps the heat in check so you're running within the correct tolerances, translating to a longer engine life.
Literally, this whole APV engine is like it went into the mod-shop and got a do-over. Pistons, cylinders, injectors, reeds, were all re-done. More specific changes for this engine were outlined by Tech Editor Olav Aaen in our October Buyers Guide issue (p. 60). Taking into account the lighter crank, new exhaust, and 1.9 lb. lighter skis, the new 800CFR should be at least 5 lbs. lighter, overall, than last year.
The CFR's new skis are a half-inch wider and have a stiffer and deeper keel than last year's model too. These changes keep the sled flatter in the corners, and give it more bite. The width should also help flotation in deep snow, when you venture off trail. There also are Frogzskin hood vents to replace the old steel mesh on the sled's nose, on both sides of the bumper and on the hood's side vents. These come standard (also on the Crossfire and M-sleds) and the fabric allows air flow, but stops snow from being ingested under the hood and possibly packing the airbox.
From a weight and cost standpoint this sled outperforms its big brother the CFR 1000. We're anxious to see if it outperforms the 1000 in the speed department as well, but in our preliminary testing, the 800 was our test riders' preferred sled.
The CFR 800 also is warm, with good hot grips, IRP custom handlebar adjustability, easy to use and read gauges, a cavernous gas tank. It also has a lot of storage under the seat and is comfortable to ride. That's all good stuff!
