"Stealing Speed" - This book, written by Mat Oxley, chronicles the fascinating tale of how several key pieces of 2-stroke technology were developed during the Cold War and later leaked to other factories when the star rider defected and sold the technology to the Japanese. The book provides an interesting insight into life behind the Iron Curtain in the unstable era of the 1960s when the Global Superpowers were struggling for supremacy and constantly trying to show the advantage of their ideology. Despite a lack of funding, the small Communist MZ Team was successful in beating the Japanese for a time, but after one MZ rider sold the technology to the Japanese and escaped to the West, the expansion chamber, rotary valve and port technology became widely used. It spurred the greatest era in the history of the 2-stroke engine. The book tells an amazing story of how some of the technology still used in the snowmobile industry today came to be.
