Here’s another thing. Ski-Doo put a new multi-function gauge pod on many of its sleds last year. But on this sled, and the pre-production GSX 900 ACE we had, the pod had a tendancy to pop out. At speed as we’re hustling down the trail it often would pop out right in our laps.
The good news is that it snaps back into the dash easily, but a lose dash pod at speed can be disconcerting. A quick dremmel-tool refining of the inside of the ridge/tab that holds the gauge in place rectified the situation. While on the gauge topic, we also noticed some discrepancy in the speedometer’s accuracy. During our Real World tests each season we compare the speedo with the radar gun and this sled’s speedometer varied the most of this season’s long-term loaners. The 600’s speedo was 4-5 mph higher than our radar gun recorded. Note that the variance for all the OEMs has been coming down for several years.
That said, we can’t wrap this up without touting the storage on the sled. There’s an engine-warmed storage bin between the bars and the windshield. This is an excellent spot for a hat or any other small item. Ski-Doo offers storage in the back of the seat, a benefit that we’d been wanting for several years. Optional add-on bags are available if you plan to do long-distance riding.
The X model is an efficient, easy sled to ride with plenty of pep and a suspension that will eat up any bump. X sleds are spring-buy only though, so you’ll have to keep your eye out for one.
