YAMAHA HAS BEEN known for over-building its machines and the Nytro’s stout Genesis engine makes for an ideal starting point for creating a modified machine.

Nytro has fantastic potential when modified with aftermarket accessories. Last season Yamaha began distributing a couple different kits to bump up Nytro’s performance, which makes it a muscle sled! Plus it maintains good reliability and runs on pump gas.

Yamaha offers two kits to boost Nytro, a turbo kit and a supercharger kit, both now sourced from longtime Yamaha tuning gurus Mountain Performance. The turbo is mounted in place of the stock muffler under the seat and routes compressed air through a charge tube under the tunnel to the front of the sled and into the throttle bodies. The supercharger kit uses a belt-driven Rotrex centrifugal supercharger under the hood blowing compressed air through an intercooler to the throttle bodies.

We spent time on both the then Push Turbo and MPI supercharged Nytros last winter and found both offer a huge power increase, but different styles of power delivery. The turbo hits harder on top-end, but has more lag on the bottom. The supercharger has excellent throttle response and low- to mid-range power.

The different power styles are suited to different types of riders. Big mountain riders looking for a lot of climbing oomph will favor the turbo’s top-end power, whereas riders who like to boondock will favor the supercharger.

As for installation, the turbo is simpler to install, but leaves an intake filter sticking out the stock exhaust hole. The supercharger is a more complex installation, but the machine looks stock.

With boost and a big horsepower increase the Nytro is a completely different machine. On a boosted Nytro, climbing is rarely an issue and any weight disadvantage the sled may have in stock form becomes irrelevant with so much power available.

Squeezing the throttle on a boosted Nytro is addicting. Throttle up, the boost hits, the skis lift and it rockets wherever you point it. In steep powder terrain a turbo or supercharger is almost required on a Nytro. Availability of the kits through Yamaha makes this a simple way to transform your sled.

We’ve even seen Nytros in dealer showrooms with supercharger or turbo kits already installed! So what are you waiting for?
